In 1941 or thereabouts, the then owner of the Twybil Hut, a 1790's Dutch residence in Rensselaerville, NY, put in a linoleum floor over the original very wide locust board originals. Before doing so he laid down 1" of insulation in the form of newspapers (Albany Times Union), the earliest of which dated from 1936, the last from October, 1941. The first phase of restoration of Mr. Twybil's dream hut involved of course picking up and reading ALL of the papers and reading them, a task that took about six months of weekends. The span of news covered the rise of a relatively unknown politician, one Adolph Hitler, into power in Germany, and his later exploits, including his rantings about having "secret weapons", the Hindenberg light show, fall out from the Lindbergh case - not to mention Madge Rivenbergs' winning of the Berne bowling tournament four years running. The insulation is now archived in the Rensselaerville Historical Society.
