<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> I got several very helpful responses which indicate that travelers have been able to successfully eat gluten-free in Belgium. Awareness of gluten-intolerance and celiac disease seems to be lower here than in some other European countries. Suggestions: Send ahead or take some basic supplies (bread, cereal, snack bars, etc.) with you. Delhaize, a country-wide food store chain, is starting to add a section with gluten-free items. This website is in French, but can help locate stores- http://www.delhaize.be/portal/_fr/index.aspx French and English restaurants cards have been helpful to several travelers when eating in restaurants. (Available commercially or free-or-charge on the Internet. Google "gluten-free restaurant cards"). In the Flemish-speaking regions, English was more useful than French. Many food preparations in the French-speaking area are gluten-free by nature. Be careful in the Flemish-speaking area - many dishes have flour-thickened, beer-based, or other gluten-containing sauces. Belgian fries (frites) are widely available and are usually cooked in separate fryers, so travelers have found them safe. Other suggested dishes are Steak frites and Moules frites (mussels and chips). Some airlines offer gluten-free meals, if notified ahead of time. (I reserved this on USAir with no hassle - hopefully it happens that way during the flights.) In most countries in Europe, one can also find special dietary foods in pharmacies. Last, but not least - the delicious Belgian chocolates are generally gluten-free.
