Hi Pat if sounds like Vern is a little like me very self sificient and won't let someone help.  But don't fill useless it probably has nothing to do with you it is just his independant spirit.  
 
Father in Heaven please touch Pat and let her know her worth in you.  Touch Vern also and let him know that sometimes we need someone to help us once in a while help him to be able to do this Lord when needed.  In your precious name I pray Amen
