Peter,

Regular list contributor Don Penlington was kind enough to get back to me
with detailed information on how to make screen captures in IrfanView and
using Nero's Showtime. I didn't have much success using the IrfanView
method, but I did have good success using a trial version of Nero Showtime
CE available here http://trailer.nerodigital.com/enu/download.php.

I'm certain now that the machine needs a video hardware upgrade and, given
that I've already put countless hours of software upgrades and tweaks in
place to keep this antique machine useful in today's computing environment,
I plan on installing a modern 64 or maybe 128 MB PCI video card with good
driver support.

BTW, referring to your original response, I experienced the problem with all
video files (not just QuickTime movies), too.

Kind regards,
Jeffrey Ottie

Peter,

Thank you for your prompt reply .. <SNIP> .. I'm running W2K SP4 on an
almost seven year old Gateway PC .. <SNIP> .. with .. SNIP> ..an Intel
RC440BX motherboard .. <SNIP> .. with 8MB of integrated video .. <SNIP> ..
using the NVidia Riva 128/128ZX video driver ..<SNIP> .. on the W2K
Professional installation CD. To the best of my knowledge that is the most
up-to-date driver available for this chipset .. <SNIP>.

<SNIP> .. If it is indeed a video or video driver issue, I guess I could
plug in a well-supported 32 or MB PCI graphics card and be on my way <SNIP>.

Thanks again for your help.
Jeffrey Ottie

I don't know if your problem has the same cause, but I had a similar
situation with any video file. The cause turned out to be bad video drivers.
By bad, I don't mean corrupted, just poorly designed! Updating the drivers
fixed my problem.
