Peter, Regular list contributor Don Penlington was kind enough to get back to me with detailed information on how to make screen captures in IrfanView and using Nero's Showtime. I didn't have much success using the IrfanView method, but I did have good success using a trial version of Nero Showtime CE available here http://trailer.nerodigital.com/enu/download.php. I'm certain now that the machine needs a video hardware upgrade and, given that I've already put countless hours of software upgrades and tweaks in place to keep this antique machine useful in today's computing environment, I plan on installing a modern 64 or maybe 128 MB PCI video card with good driver support. BTW, referring to your original response, I experienced the problem with all video files (not just QuickTime movies), too. The cause turned out to be bad video drivers. By bad, I don't mean corrupted, just poorly designed! Updating the drivers fixed my problem.
