OPINION Letter to Kofi Annan By Yero Jallow -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- November 19, 2005 His highness, UN secretary General, Sir, Allow me, in writing this letter to extend to you, the entire United Nations Counsel and its member elements my highest respect, consideration and reliance on being the efficient world body to mediate in world affairs, in ensuring long term peace, democracy and rule of law. I am compelled to pick the pen, and signal the United Nations and the whole world that Banjul, The Gambia is one place not to be neglected in the quest for justice, and ensuring peaceful co-existence. Whatever this pen will cost me, so be it, and i am honestly a dead man walking, whose tears are rolling down my cheeks with memories of daily oppression of the Gambian people. This is a time in life, when we expect You (Mr. Koffi Annan, your highness), George W Bush, Tony Blair, Nelson Mandela, Mbeki, Obasanjo and other world leaders to condemn the heinous acts committed by the Jammeh regime, and call on the regime to step down, or a forceful means to be operated on them. The wake of a new terror type of governance by the Jammeh regime is at extreme now. Since 94 until now, we have seen nothing other than the harassing, intimidation, torture and arrestation of journalists, political activists and the general citizenry. There isn't any citizenry constitutional rights observed, and the gun is echoing loud on any body who dares stand in the midst of a dictator, out there to monster people and enrich himself. The continuation of this dictatorship regime to dwell on terrorizing the people of its nation, and preying on them in a very annoying way speaks volumes. I remind you that The United nations and its members should never neglect us. The Gambia is a part and parcel of this world. The silence of the United Nation about the Gambia, in the wake of horrible terrorist acts committed by the Jammeh regime kept the whole Gambian nation wondering as to what can the united Nation do for us, which until proven to us by action , then we doubt if United Nation have us at heart, and on their calendar. I call you (your highness) to set up watchdogs, and see for yourself the magnitude of suffering that the Gambian people are going through. If this is not stopped, Gambians are moving to the next level of picking stones, sticks, guns, bows and arrows to start shooting at each other, in which case a lot of lives might be lost. Getting to that situation is what peaceful Gambians are trying to avoid, and the matter looks inevitable as it seems neglected, and the hands of peaceful Gambians are being twisted beyond elasticity limit, in which case the only option confronted with any is to resist oppression, and resisting oppression is not being a criminal or war preacher. Sir, To the effect of the urgency of this matter, I call for an immediate condemnation by the United Nation, for the recent arrest of the top NADD opposition leaders namely NADD coordinator, Hon. Halifa Sallah and his associates Hon. Bah and OJ by the Jammeh regime. This, which is the most recent among the series of such terrorist activities by the Jammeh regime is the last stroke that broke the camel's back, and Gambians greeted this with shock and dismay, as we move towards presidential elections in 2006. With this trend of happenings, i also call on all respected and reputable bodies to withdraw their representatives (ambassadors and counselors) in protest of the terrorist activities committed by Jammeh. I call on other patriotic Gambians working with the regime to resign and safeguard their integrity, and make a protest in view of the oppression committed by the regime on the people of its nation. Sir, Lastly, the United Nation should help Gambians prosecute Jammeh and his blatant killers in the international court, and henceforth an arrest warrant be put on his head, for failure to comply with the Gambian constitution and the United Nation stipulations on human rights, which the Jammeh regime violated to the fullest openly. In my effort to convey this message to you, I remind you that Gambians are exhausted and we call for an immediate action to be done by the United Nation and all its members. In a last note, i call on Gambians at home to exercise patience and to watch for orders to march to the streets soon, which in my view is in the pipeline. All Gambians outside the country should rally up and march to the different United Nation Headquarters and the Gambian embassies in the different regions.
