Greetings David and list--

There is an early step in the XP setup process (before you get to the GUI-based stuff) where you are required to press F6 and insert a driver disk for any "mass storage devices" you may have. Did you include that step and put in the IDE controller's driver disk when you booted from the installation CD?  Without doing so, the XP setup may have no way to recognize a hard disk that may be otherwise visible to the hardware in your system.
