'm trying to network a Dell Dimension 8300 and a Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop. Both machines run WinXp with SPack 2 installed and have 512 RAM. Running Norton System Works 2003 on Dimension 8300 and AVG on laptop. Running CounterSpy on Dimension 8300 and Microsofts Anti-Spyware on the laptop. Internet Connection is cable... connected through a Linksys 4 port Router. All hardware installed and cables connected. C: drive on each machine has sharing enabled. Ran the WInXP Network Setup Wizard on the desktop, created the network disk and ran it on the laptop. From the desktop, I can ping the laptop and router successfully. From the laptop, I can ping the router and the desktop successfully. Can also ping 127.0.0.1 fine from both machines. Network places sees both machines. I can open the network place of the computer I'm using to access. However, when I click to access the other machine, I get these messages. For laptop: \\Dell8300 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied. For Dell8300: \\Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Access is denied. Dell Desktop name is: Dell8300 IP address 192.168.1.100 Inspiron Laptop name is: Laptop IP address 192.168.1.101 Workgroup name for both is: Linksys Router IP address 192.168.1.1 (Have changed no configuration in router from the default configuration during setup) Windows Firewall is off as I run Zone Alarm Pro. Laptop computer address is in trusted zone of desktop computer. Desktop computer address is in trusted zone of Laptop. Thinking I may not have Zone Alarm configured correctly, I changed the option of Zone Alarm not to load at start up on both machines. Rebooted. Checked to make sure Windows Firewall was not turned on. Tried to access computer through Network Places. I can see both machines. But the same result as with the firewall enabled: Access denied with same message. With or without Zone Alarm loaded and enabled I can access each machine by going to Start/run and typing: \\Dell8300\C\ or \\Laptop\C\ A connection is made immediately and I can access the files. I'm the only user of these computers. Each has an administrator account and Sue's account when I log to safe mode. Both accounts show as administrators. I did give full permissions while logged in with the administrator account. I don't see that option when logged on with the Sue account. I'm needing help in figuring out why I can't access the computers through Network Places. Network Places is so much easier to use than going to Start/run to get access. Any suggestions or workarounds for Network Places to work correctly?
