The Independent Editor Resigns

Abdoulie Sey, editor-in-chief of The Independent newspaper is reported to have resigned from his post.

Although Mr Sey has to refused to make any comment about his resignation, Abdoulie Sey sources said he was forced to quit due to pressure from his family. Sources added that Mr Sey's family have become very concerned about his life since the gruesome murder of Deyda Hydara by unknown assassins.

Mr Sey who has received many death threats together with the paper's managing editor Alagi Yorro Jallow for their 'harsh editorial' was arrested and detained last year for three days by the National Intelligent Agency (NIA) without charge. Mr Sey claimed that he was dumped barefooted in a mosquito infested cell and was subjected to an inhuman treatment by the NIA who promised to make life difficult for him if he continuous to work for The Independent.

Mr Sey joined The Independent in 1999 as a sub-editor and later rose to the rank of editor-in-chief following Baba Galleh Jallow's sojourn to the US.

Since its establishment in July 1999, The Independent has face a lot of harassment such as arrest and detention without charge.

In August 2003, the paper was attacked by unknown arsonist who burned some of its equipment. It was also attacked in April this year by armed men who attacked its printing press, which burned down and disabled their printing machine.
