Your breath and urine smell can be an indicator.  I'm in ketosis almost all the time.

I had a strong free weights workout last night and woke up today not needing "recovery".  I had ingested a large amount of protein throughout the day yesterday.  Apbut 40-70 good carbs (asparagus, spinach, small apple).
I don't buy into the "carb up" theory that a lot of the bodybuilders are into.
