Now I need to get the names of the best doctors for CD in Maine, so I can find out which plan I should choose. Types: Primary/Internist, Gastro, Gyn, and Dermatologist Where: Within 15 minutes I-95/295 from S. Portland to Waterville Midcoast between Camden/Rockport and Augusta" Doctors in Maine summary ADULT GASTRO: Dr. Igor Prokopiw (2 responses) Practicing What We Teach 1250 Forest Ave (intersection of Warren Avenue and Forest Avenue) Portland, ME 04103 (207) 878-5100 "I like my gastro very much. He had some of his medical training in Canada. He has a great bedside manner and openly considers Celiac diagnoses. The practice name is not shown in this listing but it has the word "University" in it -- they have some affiliation with University of New England and the practice is a mix of D.O.s and M.D.s. ... The inside scoop -- pronouncing his name -- it is Pro-Cop-You, with a rhythm like 'God-Bless-You'." "...and only a couple of miles from Exit 8 of the Maine Turnpike. Dr. Prokopiw is [the Portland Maine Celiac/DH Support Group's] new medical advisor. He was associated with our previous advisor, Dr. W. Stephen Gefvert, who has recently retired. Dr. Gefvert, a gastroenterologist, is married to our chapter treasurer, Sue Gefvert, who is, of course, celiac. Sue also worked in the same office with both of them and she highly recommends Dr. Prokopiw and feels he is extremely knowledgeable in his profession. ... I have not yet met [Dr. Prokopiw], but I do trust Sue's judgement. He just accepted the medical advisor role in the last couple of months, and I hope we can have him as a guest speaker sometime this fall. I do know that his sister has CD and he takes an interest in our issues." Dr Roy (2 responses) Portland Gastroenterology Associates PA 1200 Congress Street Suite 300 Portland, ME 04102 "Portland Gastroenterologists are easy to get to - just off Rte. 295 in Portland ... There are several GI docs in this practice that are good celiac docs." "dr roy followed specifically for my liver related issues. but he was also very good about the celiac problem. since i was a complete neophyte about it he made sure to give me info and refer me to dieticians. i saw him every 3 months at least but again that was for the liver problem and we combined the celiac problem. his bedside manner is excellent and he spends time listening to you and giving you info. no quick office visit and then rushing off to the next patient..." Dr. Benjamin B Potter (2 responses) Portland Gastroenterology Associates PA 1200 Congress Street Portland, ME 04102 207-773-7964 "I recommend Ben Potter... He's young, very personable and caring, and very thorough." "I contacted my brother who is a retired pathologist in Bangor/Orono, ME. He said that Dr. Ben Potter in Portland is a very good gastroenterologist but didn't think he specialized in CD. Thought that maybe you could contact him as a starting point. My brother also thought that the Maine Medical Center would be able to give you a recommendation also." Dr. Gilbert M Wilcox (2 responses) 131 Chadwick Street Suite 2 Portland, ME 04102 207-774-3461 "I do not follow up with him since my completed workup and conformation of diagnosis but rather my primary care provider who does yearly Hct and Hgb. If you are strict with the diet and no symptoms, I am not sure what else for medical monitoring there is. I had the full work up and there is a planned 5 year colonoscopy with DR Wilcox. He (DR Wilcox)is very thorough, was an engineer prior to going to medical school." Jeff Lovitz (1 response) 15 Railroad Square Waterville 207 873 1181 "I live near Waterville, I was diagnosed at the National Institute of Health in 1958. I've been going to Jeff Lovitz in Waterville. Perhaps he has learned with me. I really don't need much in Celiac care, but he has been my doctor for at least 30 years. I am now 83.Had a bad winter, recovering from an aneurysm blow out last November. I'm driving and getting back to normal. The worst part of this disease isn't the doctors, its the hospital food! Takes vigilance! My family watched when I couldn't, and the Maine General Knows a lot more about celiac disease than they did when I arrived!" PEDIATRIC GASTRO: Dr. John Bancroft (3 responses) Maine Pediatrics Specialty Group 887 Congress Street, Suite 420 Portland, ME 04104 (207) 772-2827 "Dr. Bancroft is GREAT! He is in S Portland in the bldg right across from maine med." "My daughter, Emily, was just diagnosed. The doctor who performed her endoscopy was Dr. Bancroft..." I think more providers have been alerted to the high incidence and are finally sending patients for workup with the symptoms reported."
