Gambia's voter registration starts Monday

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) - Gabril J. Roberts, the Chairman of Gambia's
Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), Saturday said that voter
registration across the country will start on Monday and will end on
17 May in readiness for local polls in 2005, ahead of the
presidential contest a year later.

Roberts was speaking during a media briefing held at the IEC offices
in
Banjul. According to the IEC chairman, preparations have been
concluded for the exercise to commence on Monday as scheduled.

Roberts said the supplementary registration exercise was meant to
register all those Gambians who could not do so during the last
registration exercise.

The
Gambia will hold local government and municipal elections in 2005
and the presidential poll in 2006.
