There were 350 attendees at the conference, half from the United States. The majority of the presentations were related to the evaluation of gastrointestinal bleeding originating in the small intestine, the currently approved indication for video capsule endoscopy (VCE) in the United States. Among the 71 lectures and presentations there were 3 on the role of capsule endoscopy in celiac disease. Dr Green gave a presentation on "Celiac disease: the emerging role of capsule endoscopy" in which he reported on a study of 47 patients, performed in collaboration with Drs Moshe Rubin and Andrea Culiford at Columbia University Medical Center. The study involved patients with complicated or poorly responsive celiac disease. In addition there were presentations about VCE and celiac disease from Finland and Germany. VCE allows thousands of images of the small intestine to be taken. Until now the small intestine has remained relatively inaccessible to gastroenterologists. The exact role of VCE in celiac disease is not established. However, there is potential for VCE to have an important role in the diagnosis and management of celiac disease. We are currently studying the subject. Only when there are published studies on the topic will celiac disease be included as an indication for VCE and be appropriately reimbursed by insurance companies. *Support summarization of posts, reply to the SENDER not the Celiac List*
