Sue This link will get you to the appropriate 3-com page for an analog modem/router/switch device which I use for clients with dial-up. http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&pathtype=purchase &sku=3C888-US This works well and will solve all your issues. If you don't want to make this investment then I suggest a 10Mbs hub or switch (you should be able to find a used one for free or next to nothing) or a new 10/100 switch (Linksys 5 port, CNet, DLink etc. for cheap). These will make networking easier. If you can afford it the Office Connect 56K from 3-com is a great product. I have two home built computers networked together with a crossover cable. Both have onboard LAN (one Realtek, one Davicom). Both are running Win98SE. I cannot get internet connection sharing to work. I have previously had it working with two previous computers, same setup, same OS, everything the same except different specs MoBo and memory wise. Those older two were linked with 3Com NICs and I had no problem as long as I assigned IP addresses to each. The problem appears to be that I cannot ping the other computer (either way). The networking is fine, I see both computers and can access one from the other. ICS was set up and the client computer (no modem) could not access the internet. I uninstalled ICS, tried three different other ICS programs, same problem with all. All pings to the other computer time out. Thinking it might be the cable length (it's 50 feet, which should really not be a problem but who knows), I brought the client into the same room and swapped it out with a known good 10 ft. cable. Network is fine, but still the pings time out. I currently have assigned the 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 to the two different computers, but have tried others without success. I have also tried in the ICS to assign IP addresses automatically, and every other configuration I have seen suggested in various help files. I'd really like to get the other computer able to access the internet. We only have dial-up here, so please no suggestions regarding routers, broadband, etc. All we have available here is satellite for broadband, and that's really not acceptable. Nor is the "DSL" my phone company offers for US$60 that's limited to 128 KB, plus the need for a paradyne (read expensive) router an acceptable (to me) alternative. If there is a router that would work with an analog dial up connection, I'd love to hear about it, because if necessary, that's the way I could go. But I'm hoping someone would have suggestions as to why the ping might be timing out and what, if anything I can do about it. Again, everything works (in fact no matter how many times I change the configurations) as a network, just no internet connection sharing. If it matters, I've tried Wingate, Nat32, and Soho Connection as alternatives to M$ ICS. Anxiously awaiting any thoughts from the network gurus and thanking you in advance.
