Most everyone is aware of the Section 508 standards for Web accessibility for users with disabilities, but that is only half of the Section 508 story. One day, the other shoe will drop! Section 508 deals with providing access to electronic information including equipment used to handle that information which does mean the Web, but it also means computers, copiers, scanners, and a number of other devices especially now that microprocessors are becoming embeded in everything and all kinds of new devices each year are being adapted to access the Web. With many colleges and universities adopting Section 508 for Web accessibility, the courts may well think it only reasonable to require them to apply the Section 508 standards for on-site technology as well. Doug Wakefield from the Federal Access Board will be presenting "The Other Side of Section 508" as an EASI webcast on April 22. Watch the EASI clinic page for details: http://easi.cc/clinic.htm Meantime, EASI has 2 very relevant online courses during March that focus on on-site accessibility: Barrier-free Information Technology: http://easi.cc/workshops/adaptit.htm Train the Trainer http://easi.cc/workshops/train.htm (Both courses will count towards the 5 courses required to earn the Certificate in Accessible Information Technology: http://easi.cc/workshop.htm) Barrier-free Information Technology Lesson 1: Introductions and definitions Lesson 2: Four reasons to provide barrier-free educational technology Lesson 3: computer input problems and solutions Lesson 4: Computer output problems and solutions Lesson 5: Compensatory Strategies and Disability Etiquette Lesson 6: Access to print information Lesson 7: Access to physical facilities and staff training Lesson 8: Planning for an Accessible Campus or Institution Train the Trainer LESSON 1: INTRODUCTION TO TRAINING USERS WITH DISABILITIES LESSON 2 OVERVIEW OF PERSONAL COMPUTER HARDWARE PLATFORMS LESSON 3 THE WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEM AND ACCESSIBILITY LESSON 4 TECHNOLOGY FOR VISUALLY IMPAIRED CONSUMERS LESSON 5 TECHNOLOGY FOR PERSONS WITH HEARING RELATED DISABILITIES Lesson 6 ALTERNATIVE INPUT SYSTEMS Lesson 7 Technology For Persons With Learning Disabilities Lesson 8 Evaluations and Report Writing ** Note EASI will be broadcasting from the CSUN conference on Technology and persons with disabilities all day on Thursday, March 18.
