From http://www.observer.gm News Lang Conteh arrested By Malick Faye Jan 20, 2004, 10:43 In another apparent swing of the electric broom under the “Operation No Compromise”, Lang Conteh, the former foreign exchange manager at Central Bank, has been arrested and detained by the police since Sunday night. When contacted for confirmation yesterday, Inspector General of Police Landing Badjie said, “Yes, it is true we are holding him. He was arrested Sunday night for alleged fraud and the matter is currently under thorough investigation and that’s all for the mean time.” Although IGP Badjie refused to disclose location, Mr Conteh is believed to be detained at the Fraud Squad offices, police headquarters, Banjul. Mr Conteh is a co-proprietor of Camelot Holdings, which includes Camelot Trading and the trendy Kairaba Avenue Camelot boutiques: Mall of The Gambia. He was a close business associate of House Majority leader, Baba Jobe. Since the fall of Mr Jobe, speculation was turbo-driven in town about the imminent arrest of Mr Conteh. He has since travelled out of town on several occasions but has always defied anticipation and returned home and in fact recently remarried. Since he was removed from the Central Bank along with other top executives reportedly at the insistence of the World Bank late last year, Mr Conteh has been concentrating on his orchard and Camelot businesses which include the proposed Afri FM radio station, the proposed Camelot Plaza opposite the current mall as well as two other projects. Mr Conteh was also the chairman of the defunct Observer Company board. Lang Conteh, a native of Niamina Dankunku, is a qualified stockbroker and a holder of impressive string of degrees in economics, accounting and finance. Workers at Camelot Boutiques were unavailable for immediate comment yesterday as the business house was closed in the late morning. © Copyright 2003 by Observer Company ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ To Search in the Gambia-L archives, go to: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/CGI/wa.exe?S1=gambia-l To contact the List Management, please send an e-mail to: [log in to unmask] To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
