<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Hi all, I thought it was interesting that most people who emailed me (out of 25 replies) indicated that they have never had a reaction to any gum with gum base in it (this is good news). Here is Wrigley's response to someone inquiring about their products: Dear Mrs. (snip), Thank you for writing to ask about the gluten content of Wrigley's gum. You will be pleased to know that Wrigley brands contain no wheat, rye, oats or barley gluten. However, does your sensitivity extend to other types of gluten? We ask only because several of our brands contain corn syrup, which may have trace amounts of corn gluten in it. The amount of gluten in one stick is less than 0.2 milligrams, but if you are extremely sensitive, you may want to consult with your physician before chewing our brands. Additionally, no packaging material directly next to our product contains gluten sources. There may be instances when starches are used on the label around each individual stick of gum, but these starches are produced from corn or potatoes, not from wheat, rye, barley, oats, millet or buckwheat. By the way, since our formulations change from time to time, you may want to check back with us periodically to verify this information. We hope this information will be helpful. Sincerely yours, WM. WRIGLEY JR. COMPANY, Nancy Slivoski - Consumer Affairs Coordinator Here are a list of other gums that celiacs have told me they chew, but please note that I did not receive and confirmation from them that these brands (below) have been verified by the companies as GF: Eclispe Gum, Bubble Yum, Bubbilicious, Super Bubble Gum (by Hershey's), Double Bubble, Orbit Bubble Gum, and Carefree Here are a few more interesting comments: "I have never heard of there being gluten in gum base." (I got this quite a bit) "Not every food on the unsafe list is ALWAYS unsafe. For instance, food starch is on the list but MOST food starch is GF. It means you have to check the product. My bet is that virtually all gum base is GF but a small fraction might not be." "I have heard that Wrigleys and Dentine are GF. Lots of chewing and bubble gums are listed as gf on various gf lists so I am not sure why gum base would have been on the celiac.com site. Today I visited http://www.gumbase.com and asked them if gum base ever contains wheat, rye, or barley in any form. Will let you know what they say. " (if I hear back from this person I will make sure and send this info to everyone) "I am not sure about this either and since we are very conservative my only solution has been to buy original Bazooka at Passover time because they make a "Kosher for Passover" run." "According to CSA/USA Cooperative Gluten Free Listing 7th edition all Trident and Dentyne gums are safe. You might want to order a copy of this book. You can contact them at 402-558-0600 or the web at www.csaceliacs.org." (a copy of this listing costs $18) "I know that chewing gums can be a problem. Many times they are dusted with a gluten containing substance. I wrote to Wrigley's not too long ago and found out that their gums are completely gluten free, from the gum itself to the paper the gum is wrapped in. I, myself, have been chewing Orbit gum for almost 8 months now with no problem." I hope this helps others as much as it has helped me. My little girl will love this news! Thanks!
