Bob, Yes you do need to update the bios first. I have an older computer with a Asus P2b rev 1.02 MB that I just recently replaced a crashed 6gb HD with a 40gb WD. I had bios 1005 and updated to 1012 to be able to read 40gb. Do a google usenet search to get lots of info on "how to," and then go to the Asus web site to get the appropriate files and directions and follow the directions exactly. I'm a beginner/novice with computers and this was my first attempt at flashing a bios and it worked as stated per directions from Asus.
