The Ramp to Success in Building An accessible Campus Information Technology EASI online course: Barrier-free Information Technology runs September 2-26 http://easi.cc/workshop.htm EASI has provided up-to-date know-how on adaptive computer and information technology since 1987. For a decade, we have taught this online course providing an overview of developing an integrated, campus-wide system of people, hardware and software that provides a level learning space for students with disabilities. We now have the technology to empower students with disabilities to compete with their peers as never before. However, it is crucial that an institution tackle it with an institution-wide commitment and do not "dump" the issue into either the laps of the disabled student office staff nor the computer support staff. It must involve administration, faculty, librarians, student support staff and computer staff. With the constant changes in hardware and software, this is an on-going program and not a one-time fix. The more it is planned for, the less retrofitting has to be done to resolve a crisis. This course is taught using e-mail for class discussion and course content is located on the Web. The 8 lessons are covered, 2 per week for a month. The class content includes both text, graphics and multimedia. All content is fully accessible by anyone using adaptive technologies. Instructors are, themselves, adaptive technology users and have years of teaching at a distance. EASI has had 3 National Science Foundation Grants. Its instructors have been given several awards for their work in both the fields of disabilities and distance learning.
