coming together to meet in local areas, go here. This is a place to let
people know that you will be traveling in their area, as well as to
find out who your neighbors are in PTN. It is also a place to post
notices of local events that are of interest to PTN members.

on. You may also post questions here if you are looking for solutions
or help with project problems.

Tool Forum
If you like to talk about tools, and most of us do, then this is the
place. If you are looking for a tool ask here. If you have a tool and
you do not know what good it is, tell us. If you know where to get neat
tools, share. If you want to sell tools, this is as good a place as any
to start. Do not forget the annual auction.
Education & Scholarship
This specific interest area is for the PTN Education & Scholarship
Committee and any and everyone who wants to talk about any topic
related to education of the trades in historic preservation. Educators
have had from the beginning an integral role in supporting and
participating in PTN. The primary function of PTN as a non-profit
organization is education. PTN members work to expand an understanding
of the preservation industry and of the best practice of the
construction trades applied to historic preservation. PTN works to
educate the youth of our communities in the role of the trades in
historic preservation. PTN involves senior citizens in workshops and
events in order to assist them in sharing their knowledge and
experience. PTN works closely in alliance with a variety of educational
groups and institutions. As well, within PTN there is a strong
commitment to providing scholarships for youth to attend the annual PTN
workshops. This is also the area for discussion of the Whitehill
Revisited project.
PTNews
This area is for discussion and development of the PTNews which is the
hard copy print newsletter for the PTN membership. If you have an idea
for a story for PTNews then introduce it here. If you know of an event
that you would like to see listed in PTNews, post it here. If you would
like to assist and volunteer with the print newsletter then this is a
place to begin.
Askin's Achievement Award
The primary award given out on an annual basis by PTN is the Askin's
Achievement Award. The nominating committee for the AAA is made up of
the prior recipients and the committee is always open to nominations.
This area is also the place to bring up ideas for other PTN awards. PTN
makes a sincere effort to provide recognition and thanks to all of the
people who make the organization and the network possible. Sometimes in
the hustle and bustle of making a living and getting to the next day we
forget to stop long enough to share our appreciation. Here is the place
to provide positive reinforcement for good deeds.
Organization Liaisons
PTN is a network of individuals, but it is also a network that reaches
out to a variety of organizations within the preservation industry. PTN
began as a Task Force of the Association for Preservation Technology
International (APT) and throughout the birth and growth of the network
has continued to share with APT a vital and dynamic liaison. Since the
beginning of the trades network there are many many organizations with
which PTN has formed liaisons and there will be many more in the
future. This area is for discussion of these relationships. If you have
suggestions or requests as to potential organizational liaisons with
PTN then please voice them here.
Preservation Trades, Owners, Design Professionals
Preservation Trades
If you are a tradesperson working in historic preservation then this is
where you can relate with other trades. This area is for the Gathering
of the Trades. A good place to vent your gripes about the industry,
tell tall stories, and otherwise get to know your peers. Keep in mind
that you are not alone.
Property Owners
This is an area in which property owners can express their views. It is
often said by property owners who do not know where to look that there
are no trades qualified or experienced in historic preservation work.
Though PTN does not recommend or evaluate the qualifications of members
the network remains an informal resource for property owners to locate
experienced trades. Property owners are represented within PTN ranging
from the single structure, such as a house museum, to large
organizations like the Smithsonian or the National Park Service. PTN
also serves as a resource for the trades to relate with property owners
who may have projects that need to be completed.
Design Professionals
PTN is a resource for design professionals, architects, engineers and
conservators to locate trades experienced in historic preservation.
Design professionals have had from the beginning an integral role in
supporting and participating in PTN. PTN also serves as an educational
resource for design professionals in that PTN trades members share
through such activities as the annual PTN workshops, and through local
demonstrations, their knowledge of the process of historic preservation
as it is accomplished in the field, in the real world of bricks and
timbers, on the materials of historic fabric. PTN also serves as an
opportunity for trades to become more familiar with working as integral
members of the design team on historic projects by gaining knowledge
and understanding of the problems and frustrations faced by design
professionals.
