My version of Office XP does not exhibit the behavior that you describe. I
did install Office SP2 on my computer. Perhaps that includes a fix for your
problem if you have not yet installed that service pack.

Type a line of text. Click Enter.
Type a number 1, tab, and then type some brief text.
Hit Enter and after the automatic number 2, type some more text. Repeat
several times. Now - here's the clincher: Place your cursor in the margin so
that you can select the entire first line of text. Select that text, and
then click on the Bold icon. All of your automatic numbers will disappear,
and the entire sequence will be bolded. Now press Undo. The top row is bold
and the numbers have returned.
