I have seen a strange problem under XP for a few times.
The problem:
under clear install of XP (perfectly good hardware) with no extra software installed (just XP itself + device drivers), on few machines, I have seen for no reason, there is HDD activities going for few seconds, then nothing (normal) for a while, then same activities - "back to normal" repeat itself. There are absolutely no background programs (eg screen saver)and no power saving, no scheduled tasks. I have opened task manager to track what's going on, and found when ever the strange activities happened, XP defrag process was responsible for it. What seemed to me, is that XP trying to load defrag and then shut the process down because there is no call for it.
I know that under win2k/XP, it is normal for every a while, HDD LED flash for few times but no CPU time used and no real activities. but the problem HDD activities is not normal because you can clearly hear HDD spin up, and under task manager, you can see huge amount of CPU time been eaten up (result of pause for everything else if there is any).

Anyone knows anything about it? MS seems has nothing refer to it.
