>Heard a quickie on the evening news; the Atkins diet was found to have >remarkable success in acheiving weight loss; however, they point out, >weight was gained back (presumeably after quitting the diet) by an equal >percentage of folks as compared to other diet methods. Well, DUHHH! You'd >think they'd get a clue. Ha! You wish. It'll take an act of God for The Establishment to get a clue. This story's been all OVER the place but also done heavily at the local level here in Denver, as one of the studies appearing in the NEJM was a CU study (University of Colorado). Finally this morning, I heard CBS' Dr. Emily Senay point out that both the low-fat AND the low-carb groups gained their weight back. I'd bet all I own and then some that if a study had come out on a low-fat diet, no one ever would've mentioned the weight coming back. At least not in the damn HEADLINE! Seriously. That nugget was in the headline of the first story I saw. Another interesting point or two. The chief researcher in the CU study is a high-ranking member of the AHA. He (and everyone else from both that camp and the press) point out that this is only a short term study, so we don't really know. News flash! There's never been a long-term study of a low FAT diet, either. Good news in the end, of course, but even Senay (CBS) admitted it was nothing new - other studies have shown the same thing. The hardest hitting fact was that these were the first studies to appear in the New England Journal of Medicine. More will follow, and they'll all kick nutritional ass. CU's already working on their long-term study. The funniest one I heard had me all but screaming out loud with laughter, though. I forget the reporter but it was the kicker package on last night's CBS Evening News with Dan Blather. The reporter said that on Atkins, people were better able to remain satiated, "but no one knows why." Seriously. I swear to God. I thought I was watching Letterman for a second.
