<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Hello, Here is the feedback I received regarding a "loopy colon". I have heard of so called "loopy colons" being a genetic thing. I would make sure you are watched carefully for obstructions, etc. as you get older. First of all, let me say you have my sympathy for not having been fully sedated, as I have woken up partially during each procedure. My colon has been formally reported as a 'long, tortuous' colon. (I am 5'2 and petite and young, so when I initially read this I was ready to slap this GI MD!) This dr. also never dxd my celiac, he insisted it was gall bladder , ibs and nerves. (He was Harvard trained, go figure!). My next GI, who is more on the ball with this, said that most persons with CD have tricky, long and unusual colons due to the fact that for many years we have not been fully digesting foods and thus the colon has grown and evolved within us to accommodate the extra bulk etc. I do not know if this is true, but when I went to him with my files (I was self diagnosed and went to him for confirmation) he was not surprised to read the offending passage. After the scope, which I woke up during due to the tricky nature of my colon, he said it was everything he expected and more. Short of a resection surgery which is done ffor folks ith real bad problems like cancer or divreticulitis, I would just ignore it . As for my condition, I am jus t glad that I am not a celebrity and that the tabloids never got a hold of my records! Hope this helps and if nothing else, lets you laugh. PS...My brother, who is not celiac, but suffered with terrible food allergies for years in childhood and nearly died from intestinal problems as an infant, has a tricky colon with 'kinks' in it where food lodges and inflames, and thus was told by his md to be on a good leafy grean, high fiber diet to keep things going. I was given 100 mg of demerol during the colonoscopy and the pain is very bad my colon was nice and pink i watched on the tv until the pain became unbearable . I had many surgeries for small intestional obstructions before going gf and none after. I have read books about this problem and seen pictures of twisted loopy colons. What I've read is that it is due to a lifetime of poor diet and poor elimination. Colonic irrigations might help along with a diet of raw vegetables and fiber It's normal for the small intestine to be loopy. You have yards and yards of colon that fit into your abdominal space, and it loops back and forth all over the place. I also have what my doctor called a "tortuous colon." When he did an endoscopy and colonoscopy back-to-back under sedation, he did it with "Versed" -the stuff based on valium plus an amnesiac - IV, and Demerol - or the equivalent of these in IV form. He said I yelled "ouch" once, but not other problem. He used a child-size scope for the colonoscopy - one that is very flexible. It is less painful. The endoscopy doesn't bother me. Hey, as a med student here is an anatomical possibility: adhesions. You have connective tissue anchoring your intestines to the back wall of your body. It is *very* common for this connective tissue to get inflamed/stick together/etc, especially in persons with GI tract disorders and most of the time once you get an adhesion, there is no way for it to get "unstuck" without the appropriate body work. Beyond that, most people don't even know they have them! Having connective tissue from intestinal loops not necessarily next to each other adhered together could most definitely cause such a thing. I personally have had a great number of adhesions (I have deep tissue body work done to help release them) twising my bowels in the past. The more bowel irritation and inflammation you have, the more adhesions you will have. I'd be happy to answer any questions for you :) ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ CONFIDENTIALITY NOTICE: If you have received this e-mail in error, please immediately notify the sender by e-mail at the address shown.
