BTW, remember the guy who was doing the "ADA abuse" thing here at work? Well, you're not gonna believe what happened yesterday! Seems this guy was going to my management on my behalf (I had no idea) and telling them that I needed all sorts of stuff for "reasonable accommodation" (palm pilot, ergonomic chair, VR software). My boss starts having a fit because this guy says he's representing me as an advocate. My boss asks him, "Why does't Kyle see me himself if he needs this stuff?" The guy said, "Kyle doesn't want to 'make waves', so I'm doing this on his behalf." Then he throws down this paper that he typed up, with "excerpts" from the ADA stating that, "A family member, friend, health professional or other representative may request a reasonable accommodation on behalf of an individual with a disability. Of course, the individual with a disability may refuse to accept an accommodation that is not needed." So, I got dragged into a meeting with my boss and an HR person because the boss thinks he is going to have to comply with anyone's accommodation on my behalf. Worse yet, he thinks that he will have to buy all the stuff first and then let me turn it down! What a mess! I sent my boss the following, time-stamped email: "I want to go on record (this email with timestamp should suffice) to say that I will speak for myself directly to you or Dana regarding ANY issues involving my employment. This is to include ADA, job duties, job title or any other matter which concerns me individually. I DO NOT wish to have anyone speak on my behalf regarding any personal matters between myself and Franklin County. I will print this and keep it in my own records. Thanks. Kyle Cleveland" I then sat this guy down and told him, "Look. I'm a big boy and can handle my disability. I appreciate that you have my interest at heart, but I might REALLY have to use the ADA sometime and I don't want my name, ADA and irritation to all be linked in the boss' mind. Cool?" He was visibly upset that he'd caused so much grief, so maybe he'll drop the issue. Geez, with friends like that, who needs enemies, eh? -Kyle -----Original Message----- From: Barber, Kenneth L.
