Mr. Speaker, Hon. S.M. Dibba Hons. Halifa. Sallah & F. Jahumpa:

With the state of democracy and wisdom to be what one wishes to be at stake, I am disturbed about the Media Bill passed by the legislature. Before deciding the avenue I shall take, I will be indebted if you three tireless Gambians can set light on this controversial bill.

I am of the opinion that more Gambians are opposed to this bill. From what I have heard, many in both print and television sector, and common Gambians are concerned that their rights to free speech will be tampered with. I am further disturbed that the APRC government is unwilling to compromise, and refuses to understand indifference of political thought.

While I consciously accepted a marriage of convenience between NCP the APRC govenment, I am also willing to fully assess this marriage as it is gradually moving me to the other direction of political reality. I am willing to form a dissident NCP group in total opposition to our party leader. Though this great party was formed by SM and other members within NCP, I must stand up for what is right. While I maintain a great regard to SM, I sincerely believe that the Gambia's interest rises above all. And thus in that regard, I must search within my inner capability for a moral direction.

I am increasingly becoming aware that this Media Bill negates Gambians' rights to free speech. In such, I am willing to divorce from this marriage because it will negate my free thought. No genuine development can take place if the APRC government continues to seek a "a divide and rule" initiative.

As I revisit my policy of not being a prisoner of thought in engaging the APRC government, I will be fully served well if you three can diagnose this controversial bill.

Naphiyo,

Comrade ML Jassey-Conteh
Greensboro, NC/Kombo East Constituency
