I bought a mouse for $9.00 for my "new" system but it failed after a few weeks so I took it back and bought instead an optical mouse for $20.00. So far so good - but it has only been a few months, Any thoughts on an optical mouse? Mine also has the "roller wheel" (I can't think of the proper name) which I have never had before and would not to be without now. I read a tip once that the best way to clean the ball and rollers of a traditional mouse is to use Q-tips (cotton on a stick) and Windex window cleaner (with ammonia). I found that this method worked better than any other thing I had ever used. I do basically agree that a mouse is so inexpensive now that it is not worthwhile spending much time to try to fix one. Throw it away and get a new one.
