Hi - Usually Kosher symbols are found on the front of the package, often near the name of the product. But they may be found anywhere. ANd it's true, most products lack Kosher symbols. Many products that are safe for the milk-allergic contain non-kosher ingredients such as pork or shellfish. Also, meat that's killed in a kosher fashion is more expensive, usually, than meat that's killed in the "normal" way. And you have to PAY for your kosher symbol, too. It's very cost-effective if you're a manufacturer going after the Jewish market, but not otherwise. At this time of year, by the way, you'll see a lot of items marked "Kosher for Passover". If you're allergic to yeast, this is a great time of year for you. Yeast is prohibited at Passover. But it has NOTHING to do with milk allergy, one way or the other. And the same products should indicate whether they're meat, milk or pareve. (If you're allergic to corn syrup, stock up on Kosher for Passover Coke brand products. Anything so marked uses cane sugar for sweetener rather than corn syrmp.) More detailed information on kosher symbols is available on my web site. --Beth Kevles [log in to unmask] http://web.mit.edu/kevles/www/nomilk.html -- a page for the milk-allergic Disclaimer: Nothing in this message should be construed as medical advice.
