Competent and authoritative sources close to the Department of State for Foreign Affairs, have disclosed to the Daily Observer that the Senegalese president, Abdoulie Wade, is to visit The Gambia this weekend. According to sources, the Senegalese president is expected in Banjul on February 17, 2002 as a special guest of honour of President Jammeh to The Gambia’s 37th independence anniversary.

The Senegalese national team, the Lions, are also expected here. According to reports, President Wade would be accompanied by a high powered delegation which would include the Senegalese foreign minister, Sheikh Tidiane Gadio.

When contacted, an officials at the Senegalese High Commission confirmed the proposed visit. She said President Wade would arrive Sunday evening around 6pm but could not confirm the arrival of the Senegalese national football team. “You see, The Gambia and Senegal are brothers and the two presidents are doing everything to maintain that,” she concluded.
