Referendum Postponed

In view of the fact that section 63(2) of the Constitution, as amended by
the Constitution of the Republic of The Gambia, 1997 (Amendment) Act 2001,
provides for a transition period of sixty (60) days after the Presidential
election before the person elected as President can assume office, it will
not be possible to hold a referendum since the President elect will not be
able to assent to a Bill supported by a referendum on 13 November 2001,
within seven (7) days from its presentation to the President for assent, as
required under section 226(6) of the Constitution. Gabriel J. Roberts
Chairman
