<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> Hi Listmates. This came through to me in an online newsletter and thought it might be of interest. Zinc and folic acid are two nutrients that celiacs have trouble absorbing--so it might help someone out there. Of course, we know that celiac is the cause of our malabsorption and this was not geared toward celiacs in general--but it is mighty interesting. Lorri As we age, our food does not digest as well and as a result we absorb fewer nutrients, including minerals. The mineral zinc is closely tied to the sense of smell, so it could be a zinc deficiency that is robbing you of the incredible sense of smell. Taking a good vitamin/mineral supplement that includes at least 15 mg of zinc should take care of the problem. According to Dr. John Lee (www.johnleemd.com), if you have lost your sense of smell, try taking at least 15 mg of zinc daily for a few months; men can take up to 30 mg daily. Women should not take more than 30 mg daily and men shouldn't take more than 50 mg daily for more than a few weeks. The conclusion is always the same. When the body is not getting the right nutrients, unwanted symptoms arise.
