I'm no expert in these matters but my understanding is that not all PDFs are
alike. Those that are "text" PDFs can be handled by Adobe's new product, but
"image" PDFs cannot. The text in a text PDF is "selectable" -- in an image
PDF it is not.

Libraries that offer full-text access to e-journals from both SpringerLink
and JSTOR can see this difference. Both are PDFs but Springer's titles are
"text" PDFs where JSTOR's are image PDFs.  To my knowledge the only way
currently to deal with image PDFs like those in JSTOR is to print it out and
scan it back in yourself (for use with a screen reader).
