<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> These are the answers I received: http://www.celiaccenter.org is the site for the Univ. of Maryland celiac study- they will test for free- for family members of celiacs, I believe. It may take several months though! [From jnoga -- I believe the above statement is true if it is absolutely necessary but because of the expense of doing the test I believe they would prefer not to.] If you would like to contact the lab their info is: Center for Celiac Research (CFCR) UMAB Bressler Research Building 655W. Baltimore St., Rm. 10-049 Baltimore, MD 21201 Tel: 410-706-3734 Fax: 410-706-1669 Mary Thorpe has been my lab contact, she can be e-mailed at: [log in to unmask] Dr. Fine's EnteroLab gene test is only $150. The test results will tell you if you have one or two copies of the gene. If you are found to have one, then you will know you inherited it from one parent (but you will not know which one). If you are found to have two copies, then you will know you have inherited it from two parents. That $150 was the best money I have ever spent on myself. Because of the information I got from the test, I don't have to undergo biopsy to know that I need to be GF for life. My response to the gluten challenge & the GF diet plus he genetic information are enough to clinch the diagnosis. I strongly encourage you to go for it. Incidentally, most labs charge between $300 & $400 for similar tests. Dr Fine's website is : www.finerhealth.com From what I've gathered by talking to Dr. Fine's staff and an email from Dr. Fine is the following: his rates are posted on his website. You can get the gene test only, or along with other tests (www.enterolab.com, I think) If you have NO gene for CD, you CANNOT rule out CD. That is exactly what I wanted to do, but Dr. Fine emailed me and said it will NOT rule out CD. I'll see if I can find the email and forward it to you. It will tell you if you have the gene from one or both parents. If the test is positive, it can only tell you that you are genetically predisposed to having CD, not whether or not you have it at the present time (or even whether or not you will have it in the future), as it can be "dormant" for many years until triggered. Dr fine offers a gene test for around 200 that lets you know if you have 1 or 2 copies of the gene. This lets you know if you got it from both parents. The gene test at specialty labs is more complete for closer to 400, but only looks for presence of the gene, not how many copies.
