As I understand it, the technical definition of a hypoallergenic formula like
Nutramigen and Alimentum is that it should not cause an allergic reaction in
more than 10% of the babies who use it. So the manufacturers and doctors who
recommend it should already know that severely allergic infants may very well
have a reaction to these formulas and take that into account. The problem
then, if breastfeeding is not an option, is that the next step is an
elemental formula like Neocate, which is expensive and not well tolerated by
older infants. (Elemental formulas are made from synthetic amino acids.)
