GAMBIA EXPORTS GROUNDNUT OIL. An India-owned compnay, Premier Agro Oil has started exporting groundnut oil to the UK. According to its Managing Director N Chalapathi, groundnut oil is in high demand in the UK and the initial 500 metric tonnes recently exported is just the beginning of more to come. MAERSK GAMBIA Ltd. Maersk Gambia ltd has, with effect from 4th Instant started a bi-monthly less than container load service (LCL) to Freetown and Monrovia. THE SUPPORT TO DECENTRALISED RURAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME (SDRD). The Gambia's national development strategy, which aims to achieve sustainable economic growth and poverty reduction is looking for suitably qualified people to fill the posts of SDRD programme management unit adviser and 3 divisional programme advisers. The programme which costs 17.8 million Euros and operates in 3 of the 5 rural divisions is supported by the EDF at a cost of 14.8 million Euros with the government providing the balance. Anybody interested should contact the Department of state for Finance and economic affairs. GAMBIA DIVESTITURE AGENCY. By an Act of the National Assembly, the government has established the Gambia Divestiture Agency. The Agency is charged with the duty of implementing the state's divestiture programme in relation to public enterprises. BANJUL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IMPROVEMENT PROJECT. From loans secured from the Kuwaiti Fund and Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), the GCAA is to implement a fast track programme to undertake the following: - Earth works and bush clearing: 60 hectres. - Grading and drainage provision: 50,000 sq. metres. - Runway repairs: 3,600m by 60m. - Airport parking apron and taxiway system: approx. 5,000 sq. Metres. - Repair of airfield ground lighting: 3-4Km. - Internal service (dirt) road network: 14 Km. - Airport fencing: 14 Km. - Upgrading of existing single carriageway to dual lane carriage: 3 Km. - New single lane carriageway to presidential lounge: 1 Km. This project is to be implemented over a 6 month period and any firm interested should contact the Director General, GCAA. SENEGAMBIA ROAD TO STINK CORNER. The existing Senegambia road is being reconstructed and will be extended beyond Kairaba avenue, through the buffer zone to Stink corner (Camallo). MORE CLASSROOMS. With the objective of increasing basic school enrolment to 90% from its current level by 2005, the goverment is building another 297 classrooms in 47 locations within the country. The works will also include the construction of 75 improved pit latrines, 31 new concrete lined wells with hand pumps. HEALTH. The government is, through Gamworks, inviting tenders for the construction of civil works at Basse health centre, Fatoto health centre, Yorobawol health centre, Kuntaur health centre, Kiang Karantaba health centre and Brufut health centre.
