Even if meat was not scarce, the bright colors of a fruit bearing tree, bush or plant would attract attention, HG's would want to try these, just as a child seeing them would want to try them. It was a matter of trial and error. If an HG dropped dead from one particular fruit, berry or leave, eventually the others would know not to eat of that fruit.
