As a kid, I vividly remember illustrations of a bellowing mammoth,
trapped
in a pit with nothing but its trunk and head sticking out, surrounded
by
"Neanderthals" throwing bowling-ball-sized rocks at it. As the
mammoths
dwindled in size, and the hunters became more and more sophisticated,
this
probably became feasible, or more feasible, anyway.

If you're in LA, don't overlook the La Brea tarpits, which now have a
museum with some interesting megafauna skeletons recovered from the
tar.

But I'm sure insects were easier to get...
