Well, I have a degree in special education and knew at 4mos. that my son had
CP. However, I do not think special ed. teachers receive enough specialized
training in various disorders. Plus, there are many different areas of
special ed., LD, BD, EMH, TMH, etc. I'm certified LD/EMH, however, I had a
million questions when I got the official diagnosis for my son. So, in
answer to your question, I received training in mainly techniques and unless
I had a student with CP, I probably would not have known a lot about it. I
definitely believe it is too easy to become a teacher. But, the systems are
so desperate for teachers that I think they had rather make it easy than make
the field attractive with better salaries and benefits. Just my opinion!
