If the database was originally an Access 2k data file, then there must a
an Access 2000 PROGRAM somewhere around.....
     yes?
     no?
     all of the above? <grin>

Take the data file to a machine that is a PURE Access 97 machine
and load the ENTIRE datafile into Access 97.
Run the repair database utility.
Run the compact database utility.
Add a new record to something.
Finally close the file.
Do all the above in that exact order.
