From Daily Observer Posted Saturday, August 19, 2000 by Editor Hamat Bah, the leader of the National Reconciliation Party (NRP) and National Assembly member for Upper Saloum, claimed that he has received reliable information that the APRC government “ Is discussing the possibilities of amending the Constitution to empower the President to appoint district chiefs instead of electing them through ballot box.” Mr. Bah accused President Jammeh of intending to “ Use the chiefs for his own political gains. He wants to return The Gambia to the pre-colonial era when the chiefs were like kings and deliberately violated the people’s rights with impunity.” Mr Bah cautioned that if the APRC government insists on amending the constitution, it would “ be terrible” and they would regret it.” Mori ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe/subscribe or view archives of postings, go to the Gambia-L Web interface at: http://maelstrom.stjohns.edu/archives/gambia-l.html You may also send subscription requests to [log in to unmask] if you have problems accessing the web interface ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
