I didn't know what "BT Surftime" is; on looking it up on the web, it appears to be software installed by your ISP, British Telecom? When you say you have checked it out, what have you done so far? have you checked for device conflicts? What software do you have set up for web access from your ISP? What other software loads on startup...any fax software? I am wondering if your modem is not trying to "answer" the phone for you, which can cause problems. If this is the case you can add some characters to your modem "advanced" features to stop this...but I am just guessing at this point, pending more info.
