They have a much better telephone system than the rest of us! We also are holding a press conference with stories at that time. Barbara Toomer ******** Here in St. Louis, we're planning a kick off too! The Mayor, is sending us a letter of support for MiCASSA. Also, Michael Finkelstien from Mo P&A is coming to sign them on as a MiCASSA Supporter. We will have a big letter there for groups to sign on. We sent invitation flyers out to our MO Reps, Senators, Gov. and over 200 disability groups! I got speakers to hook into my speaker phone and we'll be doing it at the Old Dred Scott Courthouse. Also coming and speaking are two people still trapped in nursing homes and one new spunky advocate who just got on the new waiver program and is lovin it!! Take Care, Good Luck Michelle *********** Montana Campaign for Real Choice For Immediate Release Contact: Bob Liston May 1, 2000 (406) 829-9495 Peter Leech (406) 243-4597 Missoula Event to Mark Kick Off of Medicaid Reform Legislation As part of the national Campaign for Real Choice in long term care, a coalition of Montana supporters of MiCASSA (SB1935) will hold a press event Wednesday May 3rd, beginning at 9:45am in the Rural Institute on Disabilities conference room, located in the Student Health Services Building at 634 Eddy on the University of Montana campus. The Missoula event will be one of a national network of events in over 40 locations, including the nation's Capitol. The main event, in Washington, D.C., marks the kick off for the Medicaid Community Attendant Services and Supports Act (MiCASSA), co-sponsored by Sen. Tom Harkin (D, Iowa) and Sen. Arlen Specter(R, Pennsylvania). MiCASSA would level the Medicaid long term care playing field by ending the funding bias toward nursing homes and other institutions. Instead, money would follow the eligible individual who could choose to receive services in the community instead of being forced into an institution or nursing home. "This Campaign for Real Choice 2000 event will communicate to Congress and the Presidential candidates the community's overwhelming desire for fundamental reform of the Medicaid long term care system." said event co-organizer Peter Leech of the Rural Institute on Disability. Added Bob Liston of ADAPT/Montana. "Nearly 500 hundred national, state and local organizations from across the country have officially endorsed MiCASSA, including at least six from Montana." The event will include telephone addresses by Senator Harkin and Senator Specter who will take questions during the press conference following their addresses. In Missoula, there will be discussion about MiCASSA, and what it means for all Montanans, after the press conference. NATIONAL ADAPT MAILING LIST - Adapt MiCASA List
