My PC recently crashed (multiple power outages while unattended). The main
FAT was damaged and a few files were crosslinked. Without a full
re-installation, only the sound card does not function properly now.
PC: Win98,AMD K6/2 450 with 128MB DIMM on FIC VA503+ v1.2a, EIDE UDMA/33
hard drive, Diamond Viper 770 video, ISA PnP modem, Realtek PCI NIC (for
cable modem), PS/2 mouse
DEVICE MGR shows sound card devices installed and enabled with no problems
(IRQ11/DMA1 - AudioPCI, Legacy support, and gameport driver which I don't
use but it's there anyway). I tried removing card, restart & shut down PC,
then reinserting card. Also tried manually deleting drivers with card
reinsertion to verify driver file integrity. I tested the card on a
different (similar) PC and it functions properly.
In Control Panel, opening Multimedia, the Audio and MIDI tabs are grayed out
(no preferred devices and cannot select). The Devices tab for Audio, MIDI,
Mixer, and Line Input correctly shows AudioPCI devices.
What is the problem here and what's the fix (short of install all from
scratch)?
Thanks! Martin Kurr
