DAKAR, Senegal (PANA) - The United States has hailed "the peaceful, orderly and transparent manner" in which the presidential election won by Abdoulaye Wade was conducted Sunday in Senegal.

According to the US State Department's spokesman, James Rubin, this "testifies to the buoyancy of the Senegalese democracy and people, as well as Senegal's leadership in Africa.

The US has congratulated Wade on his hard-fought victory while expressing "its readiness to co-operate with him and his government to continue the privileged partnership between the United States and Senegal."

"We commend President Abdou Diouf's virtues as a statesman, as well as the grace and goodwill with which he accepted the results of the election and wished success to his successor," Rubin added.
