<<Disclaimer: Verify this information before applying it to your situation.>> I've had some good experiences with a Mexican chain restaurant, Chevy's, and thought I would contact corporate to get a detailed gf list to share with everybody on the listserv. As with any chain restaurant, it is best to speak with the manager/server to double check this info. However, when I spoke with the manager at the one near me (in Florida), I got the same answers (very comforting). Chevy's just took over Rio Bravo restaurants and are starting to incorporate their "fresh Mex" approach to those. If you find a restaurant near you or in your travels, here's their response. By the way, there was a Celiac who works at Chevy's corporate who helped this woman go through the menu. --------------------- Stacey, Thanks for your request regarding gluten-free menu items at Chevys. We're happy that you enjoy dining at Chevys and hope that you will continue to do so, despite your dietary restrictions. I have gone through our menu and made a list of items that are gluten-free and a list of those that are not. Because our menu items & methods of preparation may vary a bit from state to state, I cannot guarantee this 100%, however feel fairly confident that this information should be accurate. Several of our grilled items are marinated in a sauce that contains soy sauce as an ingredient (agua negra), so technically these are not gluten- free. This will explain why many of the grilled meats are on the "avoid" list. I am also including some ingredients that are used, so if in doubt (or if it's a new menu item), you can ask your server or the manager if the item has the ingredient. OK (gluten-free): Pork & chicken tamales Caesar salad (without fajita chicken: marinated) Sweet corn tomalito Nachos (although flour tortillas could also be fried in same oil - check with server/manager ) Chip Salsa Chips (although flour tortillas could also be fried in same oil- check with server/manager) Mixed green salad Chicken or Beef tostada salad (without flour tostada shell); Salsa Chicken (in enchiladas, tacos, tamales, chicken tostada, etc) Picadillo (the ground beef mixture in enchiladas, tacos, beef tostada, etc) are both gf (do not "upgrade" to Fajita chicken or beef as it is marinated in agua negra) Garlic whipped potatoes Pico de Gallo (tomato, onion, cilantro mixture) Apple, bacon, onion veggies Pinto beans (beans ala charra) Refried beans Soft corn tortillas (if fried (e.g. Taco Shells, could be fried in same oil as flour tortillas - check with server/manager) Black bean relish Sauces: green sauce, red sauce, meat sauce, chocolate, cajeta Dressings: salsa viniagrette, caesar, ranch Guacamole Mexican butter Chile honey marinade Corn & pepper relish Flan Pineapple salsa/pineapple sizzle San Antonio vegetables Fresh Fish of the day (need to ask how it is prepared/marinated; also request "no taco dressing") AVOID: Carnitas Chile Rellenos Chimayo salmon (Cannot determine source of vinegar in BBQ sauce) Ribs (Cannot determine source of vinegar in BBQ sauce) Spicy Wings (Cannot determine source of vinegar in BBQ sauce) Flour tortillas Black beans - seasoned with chipotle Rice - seasoning has gluten in it Pineapple marinade Ranchero sauce Taco dressing - has chipotle in it (sometimes used as a garnish on fish and taquitos - ask that they leave it off) Any item containing adobo sauce or chipotle puree Brownies Agua Negra (marinade) Flautas Coleslaw Fajitas (beef, chicken, pork, shrimp, vegetable, mushroom & asparagus) Burritos Chicken caesar (unless you request salsa chicken in lieu of fajita chicken) Mesquite grilled chicken salad Quesadillas (some areas are serving a new quesadilla on a small corn tortilla which should be ok) French fries (due to possible cross-contamination in the oil-check with server/manager) Please feel free to contact me should you have further questions or concerns. Also, fyi....I have heard that a good cookbook is "Life After Gluten". It can be ordered from [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]> . I think it's about $10.
