Hi everybody, As the July forth celebration is fast approaching, i would like to suggest that the gambia-L together with the help of our intellectual community in diaspora especially those in US to organize a massive fundraising campaign to help The University of the Gambia. The fundraising can be done in this way(a suggestion only). 1 That every Gambian attending July 4th should be encouraged to give at least $20.00 to the organising committee. 2.Those not in attendance also be encouraged to send in their contributions. 3. Bussiness selling stuffs at the occation should also contribute 4. A committee be set up that will include Gambia-L management, season educationist, July Fourth organizers, members or officials of reputable philanthropic organizations in and around Atlanta, and representatives of Gambian organisations in the United State. 5. A project document be written as soon as possible detailing the objectives of this endeavour, what strategies, programs and procedures to use . 6.A proper effective control system be in place to protect funds and also build confidence in the whole process. This could include setting up a website by Gambia-L where every donor will have an account and pin number to access any contributions he or she made. The website should have on its home page an area where anybody can look at all the financial transactions made committee. Those without computers example Ousman Bojang and his Brikama folks should be sent an acknowledgement letter specifying details of how their money is being used. This control system should be less costly. 7. That all contributions be collected on or before July Fourth Celebration or soon thereafter and organising committee can buy computers, leaning materials, etc and donate them to the university of The Gambia. May be build a computer lab? If organised well, we can have over $15,000! The suggestions above are just what comes to my mind but i am sure a lot of you have far more brilliant ideas. Please send your thoughts about this meaningful project and let me know whether gambia-L can be a leading organiser.
