My first car was a '64 1/2 Mustang Hardtop with the 289 and the dinky
little 2 Bbl Stromberg carb. My dad's boss' (spoiled) son had a Lotus
that he'd totaled, but the engine was still good, so I bought it from
his insurance co. for $400. The insurance company threw in the tranny,
gated shifter and all! My new powerplant was a 351 Cleveland bored 80
over with a Holley 1200 cfm. Man, that carb looked like a washtub!
Anyway, the 351 was way too big to fit, so we had to cut out the wheel
wells and rebuild the shock towers. We also had to cut a hole in the
hood because it would not shut with that big Holley stuck on top. I
wanted to put a blower on the thing, but I'd done run out of $$$ by that
time.

The 351 was so heavy I had to put in oversize coil springs so the shocks
wouldn't bottom out. It came with the Lotus headers and made this
wonderful bubbly sound at idle. I ran it through a pair of Cherry Bombs
for around town (or when the state police were out), but on the open
road I had cutouts for straight pipes. God, it's no wonder I can't hear
squat these days.

At first I left the stock rear-end in, but I kept burning the right rear
tire (L50s were expensive), so I found a Muncie 411 limited-slip at a
junkyard. That car was quick out of the hole, but if you really got
into it, the thing would wheel hop something awful (couldn't afford
traction bars).

Man, I wish I still had that car, but it did pay for my freshman and
sophomore years at school.

The guy I sold it to burned the motor up by running regular (unleaded)
gas in it without a lead-additive. Idiot. I heard the he spooled it up
and blew big holes in the pistons. Broke my heart.
