yesterday I mis-spoke about some issues with the Pacmate and its Braille
display. Ron Miller clarifies below.

  Hello Kelly,
Actually, if the Braille display on a PAC Mate needs to be repaired, the
display can be sent in while the user continues to use his or her PAC
Mate with speech. This modular approach is one of the strong points of
the PAC Mate. Primarily, it is intended to let the braille display be
used with a pc as well as with the PAC Mate. The display can be left
connected to the pc while the PAC Mate is carried away (by the user), or
when the PAC Mate must be used in environments that are hostile to a
braille display, the display can be left safely at home.

If the display which needs repair is still under the purchase warranty,
or if the user has a product maintenance agreement, the failing display
can be exchanged for a replacement, display which is mailed immediately
to the user eliminating any time spent without a display.

Best regards

Ron Miller

the question to consider here is the tension between reliability and
stability versus customization. If the Braille display on the laptop
fails to work properly, it can be sent back for repair without needing
to send back the whole laptop. You then could use the laptop with
speech synthesis until the fixed Braille display is returned to you. If
there are problems with the Braille display on the PacMate, the whole
unit must be shipped back to FS in Florida for repair.

Also, if the laptop doesn't work within a month, it can be returned at
most retailers for a full refund. FS may not be as flexible. Also,
most laptops can be repaired locally in a few days. there is only one
place in the world where Pacmates are repaired, from what I understand.
the turn around time is more like weeks than days, when shipping time is
factored into the process.
