I used AVG for a while when I used Windows myself. I stopped using it 
when it became unaccessible. I also used Norton for a while and Avast, 
another free antivirus software, but they were either resource hogs or 
became inaccessible.

I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials, although I was a bit 
anxious about this, since I used some non-MS software, like Firefox, 
Thunderbird and Open Office, but it was accessible and used minimal 
system resources. For windows, I recommend Microsoft Security Essentials 
or Defender and common sense.

I use Linux now as well, and although I don't use any antimalware 
software, there is malware out there for Linux. I also don't refer to 
other operating systems or applications as crap or garbage. Software is 
written by hard working people, and there are blind people who depend on 
that software for their livelihoods, so I'll make my own decision on 
what to use myself, but I won't disparage people who are working on or 
using other platforms or applications.
