I've used several different virus scanners over the years, and none of
them have done an initial scan at start up. This doesn't mean that most
don't do this though, since my sampling size is so small, and of course,
it's possible that AVG 8 does this.

I'm still using AVG 7.5, and it has a setting where you can have it
perform a system scan at the next start up if you missed the regularly
scheduled system scan. I turned this option off myself. You might want
to look around in AVG 8 to see if it has the same setting. You might
also want to check and see when AVG is doing it's regularly scheduled
system scan. I think AVG 7.5 was somewhere around 7PM, which coincided
with when I usually powered up my home system after work. I changed this
to run in the middle of the night, when I wasn't typically on the
system. Again, you might want to check out AVG 8 and see when it's
configured to perform it's regular scans.

Sorry I'm not more help, but like I said, I'm still running AVG 7.5.
Hopefully this might give you some ideas on where to look. Maybe someone
running AVG 8 can help determine if these options are still there and
what their defaults are.
