Beckley, West Virginia has its first ATM of the twenty-first century. It
is of course a talking ATM equipped with the latest technology and
features. The newspaper article below tells more. Beckley is located in
southern West Virginia and has a population of about 17,000. Mountain
State University has about 4,000 students. the potential of ATM access
for the blind through talking ATM's is now reaching in the so-called
backwaters of America, such as Beckley.

    MSU home to new ATM

    By Audrey Schwitzerlette

REGISTER-HERALD BUSINESS EDITOR

Beckley's newest ATM looks a bit different from its older
counterparts.

"It has color touch screens, multiple fast cash options, an option
to perform transactions with or without receipts, and it's audio-assist
enabled," said Nancy Kissinger, president of Bank One.

The audio-assist feature allows vision-impaired customers to use the
ATM without help from another person. It's the first of its kind in the
Beckley area, Kissinger said, adding that Bank One is the first bank in
West Virginia to install audio-assist ATMs. Others are in Charleston and
Clarksburg.

It's also a brand new machine.

"It's really state-of-the-art, and it's much more flashy (than older
ATMs)," she said.

So where better to place a state-of-the-art machine than a
state-of-the-art educational facility?

The machine's home is in Mountain State University's Cougar Den, but
it is available for public use, Kissinger noted. "Anyone can use it."

"Bank One likes being a partner with MSU," she said. "We want to
help them offer something to their students, faculty and staff to make
things more convenient for them."
